Picking the Perfect Puller: Strategies for Selecting Success

Gentlemen, welcome to Bermuda Triangle Week. What day is it? What time is it? This is the week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve where a large portion of the population is holed up at home, essentially letting the remainder of the year slide away in a time of relaxation, leisure, and indulgence. Have that extra sugar cookie. Your gym membership doesn’t start until Wednesday anyway.

If you are anything like me, your man cave has become your new place of existence. It has replaced the office, for a while. This is where you will “put in the work” for the next couple of days. If you are a truly blessed fellow, perhaps your family even gifted to you that new bluetooth speaker, or a second display monitor you were hoping for. Time to test them out.

Is football on TV? Doesn’t have to be Sunday this time of year for the answer to be yes. The NCAA bowl season and playoffs are heating up, the NFL has given us its Holiday schedule, and college basketball is beginning to tip off meaningful games. Add to the mix Full Pull’s exclusive shop tour series on Full Pull Live, and we are in Heaven.

When the action on the court, or field, or track begins to heat up, you might also find your back pocket feeling a little hot. It’s that Christmas bonus burning a hole in your pocket. Afterall, what is more fun than watching the Pop-Tart’s Bowl on one screen and Van Haisley’s shop tour on the other? Calling your buddy, and having a little folding cash on the action. (Five bucks on Iowa State, by the way).

In this amazing age where pulling is round the clock, and real money wagering is instantaneously available, sports betting has become a very real part of how we enjoy our entertainment. No doubt, many of my readers have meandered to Full Pull’s website, not only to indulge in all their favorite pulling content, but to also kick it a nickel, and put their money where their mouth is.

Therefore, let’s talk strategy when it comes to making selections in the world of sports wagering as it applies to tractor pulling. Remember, regardless of the gaming format, you are most often picking from a field. Unlike all other physical activity sports (exception track and field), pulling inherently is not a head to head competition. It’s not as simple as Iowa State versus Miami. It is more comparable to Iowa State versus the entire conference.

My single biggest strategy in pursuing your Full Pull picks: find the winner. Regardless of the gaming format, find the winner. This is either going to give you a leg up in a two of three game, or eliminate some doubt in a head to head. The next couple of strategies are how I go about this. Who will the winner be?

Strategy number two: Avoid the gut impulse to select the points champion, or the points leader. Allow me to rephrase this: don’t necessarily choose the points champ or points leader because they are the points leader. There are other ways we can sniff out a single session winner. Here is why we may want to avoid the king of the class. No doubt this puller is a dominant pulling vehicle, piloted by potentially the most adept driver. Championships are won by consistency. The points leader, when further examined, is also someone who probably has the most 2nd to 5th place finishes in the class and has attended the most pulls. This driver knows how to accrue points. This guy knows that keeping it on the track is the best thing that can be done for the season. Safe runs. Wins will happen, but they aren’t the inherent goal of this driver.

Strategy number three: Scroll all the way to the bottom of the points standings. Find the drivers who have attended the least pulls. Typically the guys near the bottom of the standings are there not due to poor performances, but because perhaps they don’t run a full schedule. What you are looking for here is the free-lancer. The gunslinger. The X-factor. Look for the drivers who have only attended four pulls or so. Once you have found these guys, now you are looking for wins. Is there a driver with seven no-shows, four hooks, and two wins? This is a guy to strongly consider. This tells me this driver can beat the points champ or the front runners at the drop of a hat. This is the person who can set it on kill and let it eat. They have potential to be your best friend.

Strategy number four: Read the results schedule backwards. In bat and ball sports the toughest team to beat in the playoffs isn’t the team with the most overall wins. It’s the team with the most wins recently. Who is performing well in the here and now. Look at the last four to five pulls. Is there a driver who has won three in a row? How about a guy who has finished fourth, then third, then second, then first. Someone climbing the ladder. Look for the guy who is on a hot streak, or who is very clearly putting the pieces of the puzzle together? Four straight wins? Pick him! Two thirds followed by three seconds in a row? That guy is due. Pick him.

Let’s circle back to the points leader. The points leader is not an inherently bad pick. Think of a Colin Ross for example. Five straight wins? No brainer. Look at the data you have. Who plays for wins? Who plays for points? Who is hot right now?

These are my personal strategies. Should you use them? I mean… in all my participation I have won… once. Look guys pulling is unpredictable. It’s the best motorsport in the world where any dog can have his bone on any given night. That’s why we watch! That’s why we love it. That’s why making our picks makes it so fun.
